What it actually is
HCEMobile runs the full Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved campaign and multiplayer in the browser, but it ships with no game data. You choose your own Xbox disc image (.iso or .xiso), and the app copies the maps folder into local storage, up to about 1.8 GB. A free account unlocks matchmaking, custom games, friends and clans, while campaign, split screen and System Link work without one. It installs as an app on phones, tablets and computers. The site describes itself as an unofficial fan project under Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules.
The legitimate way to play
You need your own Halo CE Xbox disc image. Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam and Xbox is the official modern way to play.
If Halo CE won't load
- Make sure you load the right files. The project needs data from your own copy of Halo CE; a different edition or an incomplete folder is the most common reason it refuses to start.
- Leave room in browser storage. Imported game data is kept in the site's local storage, so private windows, low disk space or "clear data on exit" settings will wipe it or block it.
- Check WebGL 2 and SharedArrayBuffer with our browser check. Heavier engine ports need both.
Chromebook, phone and tablet
On a Chromebook, Halo CE should start in Chrome as long as the browser check shows WebAssembly and WebGL 2. Low-end Chromebooks may need lower graphics settings, and managed school devices can block sites or downloads entirely; follow your school's rules. It also works on phones and tablets with on-screen controls, and a Bluetooth controller makes it far easier.
